CHI+MED researcher Sarah Wiseman is looking at the way we think about numbers and what they mean to us beyond the string of digits that represent them.
“The reason I’m interested is because I think the way we think about a number could have an effect upon the way that we type it. One of the first ways I’m looking into this is to determine how the familiarity of a number affects the way we type it. But what’s a familiar number? I can’t decide on my own. To find this out I am collecting lots of data from lots of people: I’ve created a quick online study, asking people to assess whether or not they think the number they’re seeing is familiar to them.”
